Just a few hours before attending “Making Sense of Men,” a free 3-hour workshop, I was on the verge of --- I don’t even know…calling an end to my marriage? With bruised feelings, I attended with a girlfriend. The moment I walked into the doors, my world transformed. There were over 200 women of all ages, races and backgrounds in that room (only one other African-American woman, sad to say). And, each of us was on a mission to save ourselves from ourselves.

After that painful argument just days earlier, I knew that there was something outside of my realm of understanding about how men, and particularly my man, ticks.

For the life of me, I couldn’t understand how I’d been a party to evoking so much rage from my husband, Curtis, that week.  I’d witnessed two generations of husband-bashing, so I was clearly the more “Oh, Enlightened One,” compared to my elders.  After all, I’d just finished an anthology, Journey Into My Brother’s Soul, a book that represents and celebrates the voices of Black men.  However, oddly enough, I’d never seen anything close to the women in my family “celebrating men.”

On that fateful evening, I listened and took notes feverishly. My head was swirling and I KNEW that I’d landed in the right place. Thank you, Mayumi, for guiding me to this safe place where women gather to learn how to stop EMASCULATING our men.  Even “emasculate” was a new word for me.

(Emasculate: to weaken, reduce, enfeeble, render impotent, render powerless, make ineffective.)

Without hesitation, I enrolled in the “Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women” weekend retreat, where I discovered and practice daily how to engage, communicate and relate to my husband that empowers me and him. I’m a wonderful work-in-progress, and the good news is…there IS progress.
